McClatchy Launches Text-to-Speech Audio Feature Across Its 30 Local News Sites

McClatchy (OTC-MNIQQ) launched today a text-to-speech audio feature that will offer readers the option to listen to news content produced by its 30 newsrooms across the country. This is part of McClatchy’s strategy in the audio space, which includes initiatives in smart speakers, audio search and podcasts. McClatchy is the first local news media company with a national reach to launch text-to-speech technology.

A crise do modelo de negócios do jornalismo tradicional se acirrou com a pandemia de coronavírus. No Brasil, jornais estão demitindo, reduzindo salário e cortando jornada de trabalho de jornalistas com o argumento de que já estão sentindo os efeitos da crise econômica. Segundo a Federação Nacional dos Jornalistas (Fenaj), há registro de cortes de até 70% na remuneração dos profissionais.

Fact-checking and verification were already crucial skills for journalists before the COVID-19 pandemic came along, thanks in part to the rise of Donald Trump and the alt-right’s weaponization of social media. But the coronavirus has made fact-checking and filtering skills even more important, as trolls traffic in rumors about how drinking bleach or taking megadoses of vitamin C can cure the virus, or how the rollout of 5G cell network technology caused COVID-19 (misinformation that Twitter is now removing in the UK, after a number of antennas were toppled and burned). Complicating things even further: the president of the United States is spreading misinformation about whether the virus can be treated by injecting disinfectant.
