When former vice president Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders took the stage for a Democratic presidential debate on March 15, there was no studio audience in attendance. They stood 6 feet apart at their podiums, and instead of shaking hands, they greeted each other with an elbow bump.
This is our new reality now since the COVID-19 (also known as the coronavirus) pandemic landed in the U.S. Since then, the number of affected people has grown to more than 10,000, and that number is expected to rise. In order to slow the spread of the infection, people are being asked to practice “social distancing” and stay at home.

MEDIA POST – 23/03/2020

Sara Guaglione

McClatchy and Gannett have dropped the paywall on COVID-19 content across their networks of local publications.
“We see this as an important part of our public-service mission. In times of crisis, news can be as important as the most basic utility, and we will stand shoulder to shoulder with vital community organizations and services to do our part,” McClatchy president-CEO Craig Forman wrote in an op-ed published Friday.
The post ran online in all 30 McClatchy news sites and on Sunday in print. McClatchy newsrooms have produced more than 2,500 coronavirus-related articles, according to Forman.
“Life as we know it is changing dramatically for at least the next several weeks. But the news never stops. And neither will we,” he wrote.

‘It’s been emotionally draining’: How publishers are adjusting on the fly in a time of uncertainty

DIGIDAY – 23/03/2020

Max Willens

Last Wednesday, Adam Ryan, president of the newsletter publisher The Hustle, got a vexing message from one of his clients.
An advertiser that had placed ads with the Hustle every month for the last three years was demanding that the coming week’s campaign, slated to start Monday, not run. The client, whom Ryan declined to name, insisted it be allowed to cancel despite being just days removed from the campaign’s start date.
Ultimately, Ryan and his team got the client on a conference call and worked out a deal that allowed the client to pay up at a later date. But fraught conversations like those have begun to happen more frequently in media the past two weeks, as corona-fueled uncertainty rolls through the global economy.

SmartNews and News Break first broke their existing records on March 14 and 15, respectively. Each day since then, the apps have continued to beat their previous numbers. If you compare these numbers to their average daily downloads in February, News Break’s downloads are up 214% and SmartNews’s are up 222%.

Zero incidents of COVID-19 transmission from print surfaces

INMA – 23/03/2020

Earl J. Wilkinson

There has never been an incident whereby the COVID-19 virus has been transmitted from a print newspaper, print magazine, print letter, or print package, according to the world’s top doctors and scientists.
In recent days, INMA has received a few inquiries about this scientific possibility — to which we cited World Health Organization (WHO) guidance on the matter. Yet the unprecedented global pandemic naturally breeds a paranoia about everything we touch, so let me present to you what INMA knows on this subject.
